A couple of months ago we brought a new Eco-friendly Canadian clothing line to NOOK Atmosphere, and it has easily become one of our best selling and favorite lines.
HTnaturals is a Canadian company, based in Vancouver, which manufactures every-day, casual, eco-friendly clothing. On their website, HTnaturals state that they are “committed to producing top quality, competitively priced apparel through innovation and insight, rather than thoughtless business practices that exploit the environment or workers. “
I think our clients love this line because of a combination of things – the fabrics (soft and yummy!), the styles (usually simple with a twist or interesting detail), the fit (flattering to most body shapes and sizes) and the price (especially now with the weak Canadian dollar, HTnaturals’ already good prices are extra attractive). Some of our bestsellers include the Kilarny Tunic Hoodie ($69), the Suttcliff Cowl Neck ($56) and the Seaforth Shawl/Scarf ($54) which is a great for both men and women.

In our search for eco-friendly, sustainable, fashionable clothes, I found Kimberly Wilson’s collection – Tranquilit – which is designed for all women, and especially for those who want beautiful, comfortable clothes that will work both on and off the yoga mat.
Wilson uses 95% bamboo and 5% spandex fabrics for all of her designs, which give her clothes a super drapy yet very stretchy quality, that is perfect for yoga, travel and work. I love how flattering her designs are (on the one hand they really “hold” everything in place , and on the other hand, they are very flowy, sexy and feminine). In a previous post I already showed the video of her versatile all-in-one wrap/dress, but my favorite items are actually the Tranquility Tunic and the Hoodie. The Tranquility Tunic works as a dress, tunic and shirt, and the Hoodie serves as a cardigan, blouse and hoodie.

We carry most of Tranqilit’s collection at our Downtown Barrie Store, and on our Online Storeand we will definitely be bringing the upcoming Spring Collection as soon as it is available.
Kate D’Arcy is a young environmentally-friendly fashion designer from Pennsylvania who works mainly with organic cotton, but also with bamboo and modal to create her yummy designs. I discovered D’Arcy’s Organic collection when I was looking for a line that offers a combination of color (too often eco-friendly lines tend to be very limited in colors), affordability (earth-friendly designs should be more accessible in order to drive the eco-friendly fashion industry) and innovative designs, yet is very clean and allows the woman who wears it to add her own style and accessories without clashing with the clothes. This is exactly what Toggery by Kate D’Arcy is all about.
Toggery’s designs are clean and simple, with emphasis on the details, to give ordinary articles a more dramatic look. One of my favorite pieces is the “Kristie” tank, which looks very simple at first, but with only one seem in the back and extra length, it is a perfect for “layering” with almost any other piece of Toggery’s collection, to give a more personalized look. I also love that D’Arcy gives names to each article in her collection – usually names of women – because it give an instant feeling of familiarity and connection with the garment, which adds yet another “layer” to the clothes.
As part of “Going Green” at the store, we no longer use paper bags and we now pack our merchandise in (free) re-usable NOOK Atmosphere tote bags. To make the process even greener, we do the print screening by hand ourselves with non-toxic dyes.
Most of us consume an unbelievable number of plastic bags each year, usually without even noticing it, and without thinking of the real cost of these “free” bags. By re-using bags instead of consuming more plastic bags, we can all help reduce the terrible negative impact plastic bags have on the environment. To learn more about the social and environmental cost of “free,” single-use, plastic bags, visit reusablebags.com website.
For me, the “secret” to consuming less plastic bags, is simply to be more conscious about it: carry my re-usable bags with me at all times, refuse to take “free” plastic bags when they are offered to me, re-pack my lunch in a plastic bag I already have or a re-usable one, reuse plastic bags for my garbage instead of a new one etc. This year I am committed to cutting down my plastic bag consumption to the extent that I won’t be throwing them out any more, nor will I have a huge “collection” of them under the sink…
